UAS Campus Clinic reopened March 27, after having been closed since late January. Nurse Practitioner Karen O’Kane is filling the position for the remainder of spring semester, until a full time nurse finishes onboarding for Fall. She is on campus Thursdays and Fridays through April 24, as well as the following Monday and Tuesday, April 27-28.
When asked why she chose UAS, she stated that she felt it would be a noble opportunity to provide her expertise, and to get to know a diverse variety of students. Nurse Practitioner O’Kane has lived in Juneau since 2015, and has practiced at the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium.
The Campus Clinic provides a variety of services to students such as free medical exams, Department of Transportation evaluations, contraception, STI testing, as well as limited medication options. Students will also be able to work alongside the campus nurse if other services are needed such as labs and/or imaging which can both be completed at SEARHC or Bartlett Regional Hospital, with results returned to the campus nurse.
A full-time nurse has been hired to fill the position for the upcoming academic year, ensuring that clinic services remain available for students. Further information will be released in the coming weeks.
