More than $1,600 was raised at the University of Alaska Southeast’s Typhoon Halong fundraiser on Oct. 24. All proceeds from the fundraiser go directly to the Alaska Community Foundation for Western Alaska communities devastated by the typhoon.
Corinne James described the event as a collaborative effort between multiple UAS organizations.
“This was led by Wooch.een, AAPI, and Traditional Games,” she said. “And we got to work right away.”
AAPI took the lead in selecting the menu, offering spam musubi, ube caramel apples, lumpia, pulled pork, and horchata. The pulled pork sold out within the first 20 minutes.

Lumpia and pulled pork was the most popular dish at the fundraiser. Whalesong photo.
Wooch.een also sold handmade linoleum block prints of different designs carved on linoleum blocks and then stamped in ink.
“I feel really good about it, because I feel like UAS and Juneau showed up,” James said. “And I feel like all of us are just more than happy to help our relatives in Western Alaska.”

The Oct. 24 fundraiser for Western Alaska relief brought in a steady flow of people from UAS and Juneau. Whalesong photo.
