by Mitzi Bolaños Anderson, UAS Title IX Coordinator & Director of the Office of Equity and Compliance

Welcome to our monthly Title IX column! I hope this space will help you all get to know us and the work that we do in the Office of Equity and Compliance (OEC). Here you’ll find our Office updates, both completed and in progress, as well as news and updates on federal Title IX regulations and some frequently asked questions (so please ask them!).

Completed: Title IX on the UAS website! You can now find the link to the Title IX page on the footer of every UAS page – that’s over 2,000 pages! You’ll also find the OEC contact information under the About UAS > Contact Us page, as well as a direct link to Title IX under the Life at UAS tab on the UAS homepage. In Progress: We received feedback on the OEC webpage from Wooch.Een, the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Cultural Safety (DEICS), and others. We’re working on making those updates, which we expect will make the OEC webpage more inviting and user-friendly.
Completed: UAS has an Associate Director of Equity and Compliance / Deputy Title IX Coordinator! Steffi Jedlicka has over a decade of civil rights and investigative experience in Alaska and we are so lucky she’s on our team! Steffi will be on campus for the Title IX Open House on April 12th. In Progress: Work is underway to reassemble the UAS Title IX Committee, which we hope will have representation from students, staff, and faculty on all three campuses, as well as community partners.
Completed: Emergency call stations on the housing trail are operational! We appreciate everyone’s patience during repairs. There are three call stations along the trail with push buttons that will connect to JPD dispatch.
In Progress: We are working to strengthen our relationship with JPD and find ways to enhance security on campus. Stay tuned for details on a Coffee with a Cop event.

The Title IX Committee will work to increase the amount of Title IX Advisors on campus. What’s a Title IX Advisor? Both parties in a Title IX case have the right to an advisor to assist them through the grievance process, and if a party does not have an advisor at the time that the Title IX investigation report is released, the university will appoint an advisor to that party. Advisors are staff and faculty who volunteer to serve in this role (there is a small stipend). Currently, UAS does not have any local advisors so we’re working with advisors from UAA and UAF. We expect that with some vigorous recruiting and thorough training, we’ll have local advisors ready by the Fall semester.
