The UAS Writing Center will accept submissions to Summit: University of Alaska Southeast’s Collection of Exceptional Academic Works until. Feb. 1.
UAS students can submit any academic work written in the spring, summer or fall of 2023. This year’s journal will mark the fifth publication of Summit, and its third physical edition.
These submissions will be judged by a panel of qualified faculty members, staff, and peers, selected by the Writing Center. Last year’s judging panel included JoMarie Alba, Éedaa Heather Burge, Forest Haven, and Heidi Pearson, as well as students Selah Judge and Sean Price.
As part of the journal’s Ernestine Hayes Award for Excellence in Essay Writing, one exceptional essay will be highlighted in the beginning of the journal with a special spread as well as at the Summit launch event in the spring. Last year, the award was given to UAS student Jack Imel for his essay, “We’re Cursed Too:” Whiteness, Class Struggle, and Reparations in Atlanta.”
The cover of every Summit publication is an original design by UAS Students and Writing Center tutors, such as last year’s cover, designed by Daanaa Keet Casey Lee Moats and former Writing Center Tutor Autumn Daigle. Every cover has a different style, but all feature the motif of a mountain peak.
This year’s cover is by Writing Center Tutor Sophia Gimm, who describes her stylistic approach as “painterly and whimsical,” made with gouache paint and colored pencils.
“I have absolutely loved having the opportunity to create the cover this year,” Gimm said. “I’m going for a really bright and colorful adaptation of the mountain concept, along with some formline elements.”
Students are allowed and encouraged to revise and edit their essays before submission, “so long as the spirit of the essay remains the same,” said Writing Specialist Jessy Goodman. Students can take advantage of the Writing Center’s weekly tutoring hours to work on their submissions with staff Sophia Gimm, Jessy Goodman, Don Scalia, and A.J. Schultz.
