Study Abroad: Sherbrooke, Canada

Last semester, I had the opportunity to study abroad. The fact that UAS has a study abroad program and one that is run by a supportive and passionate person is such a gift. I encourage all students to take advantage of it. There are a few different study abroad organizations within the program offerings, and students are certain to find one that works well for them. I travelled to and studied at the University of Sherbrooke (UdeS) in Canada through the National Student Exchange (NSE) and it was logistically painless. I chose to go for a single semester during which time I got to practice French with people from all over, participate in local activities, and gain valuable insight about myself. Study Away: A Semester in Honolulu, Hawaii

My exchange opportunity took me from wintery Juneau to the sunny shores of Honolulu and qualified as the ‘through the looking glass’ experience of my college career.

From the classroom studies of tropical fish anatomy to the gaping awe at the same brilliant species through my snorkel goggles, my exchange experience was all smiles.

A Voyage into Unknown Waters: My Semester at Sea

Last semester, my cafeteria served street food on the side streets of Southeast Asia. My walk to class consisted of getting sprayed by the salt water of the world’s oceans. My class lab met in a maternity hospital in Ghana. My classmates commuted from countries around the globe. During breaks, I relieved stress by mediating with monks, hiking on the Great Wall of China, and counting cheetahs in Africa. In the Spring of 2016, I traveled to Hawai’i, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Myanmar, India, Mauritius, South Africa, Ghana, Morocco, and England with Semester at Sea which were, and will continue to be, the best months of my college journey. There are many reasons why people decide to embark on European Study Abroad. Maybe it’s because we’ve lusted over a specific country, been Tumblr-ing Europe for far too long, or have otherwise been daydreamed about different opportunities. Study Away: Una Experiencia Increíble

British politician Michael Gove once said that “learning a foreign language, and the culture that goes with it, is one of the most useful things we can do to broaden the empathy and imaginative sympathy and cultural outlook of children.” Although I started leaning Spanish in middle school, I can say with absolute confidence that learning to speak Spanish and immersing myself in various cultures, as well as being able to communicate on a personal level with a large spectrum of people has been one of the most rewarding and satisfying experiences in my life thus far. Study Away: Vermont

“Not good, not bad, just different.” I said these words to myself as I sat on the plastic like mattress in the white painted brick walled room. What had I got myself into?

I applied to the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) in the Fall of 2014 with my heart set on traveling back to a country where I had lived in for 11 months a few years previous. My heart was set on it, really. Yet, a back-up plan is always important. So when my original exchange plan fell through I obtained the help of Marsha Squires, the incredible Study Away/Exchange coordinator at UAS. Instead of an international experience, I studied and traveled to a place within the boundaries of my own country, Johnson, Vermont through with National Student Exchange (NSE) program in the Fall of 2015.

I hoped Vermont would bring me out of the realm of comfort into a part of the United States that had previously not been on my radar – “the east”, and yet still this area might have some similar characteristics to home like mountains and a small town. What I knew of Vermont could be summed up into three bullet points: maple syrup, home to a few friends, and snow in winter.

I learned from my high school exchange the importance of having as few expectations as possible of the place you are visiting.  And so it was, that when I flew across the country, I intentionally had very little knowledge of my exchange destination. Continue reading “Study Away: Vermont”
